WAP4 Locomotive
Interaction and Interface Design
I worked on the redesign of the pilot's cabin for WAP4, an electric locomotive of the Indian Railways, as an academic project. The process involved understanding the ergonomics of the cabin space and the control module through shadowing and interviews with the pilots. This was followed by design interventions on a full scale mock-up for user testing. The feedbacks from the testing were implemented on a 1:4 scale model.
WORK DONE AT NID 2010
ROLE RESEARCH & DESIGN
TEAM EMIL J. ALEX & MIHIR LAGHATE
The existing interiors and control details of WAP-4, one of the most widely used locomotives by the Indian Railways.
Post task mapping we conducted a posture analysis based on reach zones for various percentiles of the user group. This was done in parallel with visual cone analysis and understanding semantics of the cabin space.
The final design interventions, based on the user feedback were implemented in a 1:4 scale model with the design details of the display and control elements as well as the elements of the cabin space like the swivel seats and storage area for the cabin crew.
